Let Me first say, I do this every year, though lots of inaccuracies, did hit on 4/6 playoff teams...
Don't get your feelings hurt, what the heck do I know, just something we have always done, and I'll keep doing it each year..hope you chime in as well
The Contenders
1. A's -League's best offense, period. This sets the bar, I believe. SP's is good and bullpen will have strong peripherals with or without saves
2. RedSox- Lots of new players but rebuilt with young guys with upside throughout. No reason this team cannot repeat. OF depth may be a concern, but otherwise looks solid
3. WhiteSox- Team has never missed the playoffs, not once, ever. No reason to think this will be the first year. Solid Offense, consistent but average SP should be fine for the long haul, bull pen will more than get the job done
Hopefuls
4. Rangers- Great Infield, Average OF after Nelson Cruz. SP is top heavy with innings eaters filling out the rotation. Bullpen is cheap as usual and success is tied to their performance.
5. Indians- Solid holds, closer is a question mark. But this team had money and spent it well. Great Offense, 1-4 tied with Nats for best rotation, rotation is the key concern. Not a believer in the closers but an active owner can easily shore this up. If the closers perform, no reason why this team isn't top 3.
6. Rockies- Solid Offense, Similar rotation to Rangers, even with losses to CC and Nolasco made up for it. Needs a closer to emerge but bully has the peripherals to be successful.
7. Phillies- My surprise team and likely most Improved. next three teams can literally all switch places easily. Ike Davis, Carl Crawford are the key. 140 games out of each writes their ticket to the playoff.
8. Mets- Another likely contender for most improved. Offense is good not great but solid throughout. Rotation and bullpen are much improved. With strong owner activity, this is a playoff team.
9. Astros- Another much improved team. Rotation needs some depth, bullpen is average and needs closers to keep job, but serviceable. Utility spots need young players to emerge and establish themself. Infield top 2 in league, OF is solid with depth throughout..very active owner will address SP, and make a run at the playoffs
Outside Looking In
10. Nats- Great Rotation 1-4, rivaled only by the Indians there. Solid bully, but offensive questions at 3B, C, LF, RF and the utility spots will be tough to overcome. If Montero, Alonso, Lahair, Melky are top players..team will be right there. But that is a big if ....
11. Giants- Josh Johnson and Posey must be healthy for 140 games, question marks in CF and RF. Rotation lacks depth, bullpen has injury concerns throughout. Had lots of cash, just didn't address holes. JJ and Buster, if healthy launch this team near the top 6, otherwise...long season
Building for the Future
12 Cubs-Offense has upside throughout the roster, biggest holes are rotation depth, and in the bullpen. Super active owner, no reason he cannot be 3-4 spots higher this year, and right there in the hunt next season
13. Pirates- Late bidding start set the tone for Ellsbury over bid, and it was all downhill before that as well. Will need to use Ellsbury cash to address holes in rotation, bullpen and overall depth
14. Brewers- Love the prospects, but few have made the splash. many are still 2 years away, there is promise here, and a committed owner helps. Ryan Braun and John Danks can only take you so far..
Each year, all teams are invited to rank the other teams and give some commentary. Just like RFA, feelings can get hurt, but should be in good fun.
everyone is welcome to chime in
