I'd like to think that everyone is up on the rules but here is a synopsis anyway.
1. CAP and live bids. Keep track of your live bids. You may not have more money in live bids than you can cover. If the Commish becomes aware of non-compliance, he will rescind your bids to achieve compliance. Neither the illegal bid nor a Commish rescinsion extends the clock. The clock goes by the last legitimate bid.
2. Roster limits. Roster limit is 40. Minimum is 38. During the offseason, you are allowed a sum of signed players plus live bids of 41. If you have 30 signed players, you are limited to 11 live bids, etc. You can waive players to create more roster room, but the contract must still be paid. If the Commish becomes aware of non-compliance, he will rescind your bids to achieve compliance. Neither the illegal bid nor a Commish rescinsion extends the clock. The clock goes by the last legitimate bid.
3. All RFAs threads are started (posted) by the rights owner. If you have acquired rights from another team, make sure sure the thread indicates that fact.
4. 48 hours of no action in a bidding thread means it's over. 24 hours for rights owner to post a match and sign a RFA. The high bidder's bid and a roster spot counts against his CAP until the rights owner indicates he is matching and signing. If there is no response from the rights owner in the time alloted, the high bidder owns the player. If you are matching and signing, post something like "Bid Matched and Signed for $?" (acknowledging you know the price) and then add the player to your roster and CAP spent. If you were the high bidder and the rights owner declines to match or fails to act, post "Signed for $?". You may or may not receive a notice that the 48 hours are up on your RFA. It is your responsibility to monitor action on your RFAs. You may PM the Commish during bidding to act in your behalf if needed.
5. Years for OFFSEASON acquisitions do not need to be immediately determined until one week before the season (specific date/time will be posted). You may carry players at their bid price and then give them multi-year contracts when you approach the deadline and if you have the CAP room. Example: You sign a player for $10. He is a $10 CAP hit. When rosters are finalized he might become $10/4yr/$12, a $12 CAP hit. If no contract is given before the deadline, he is assumed to have received a one year contract, $10/1yr/$10. During the season an acquisitions' years must be posted with signing.
7. An owner may place bids on his own RFAs.
8. You must have at least 7 players signed at all times. Make sure any trade complies.
9. Keep your roster updated. Add players you sign or receive in a trade and delete players traded away. When you waive a player, move the player on your roster from the active list to a group of waived but still paying (in addition to posting in Waivers). Keep your CAP updated with each roster move.
10. You may not delete or modify a bid.
11. During bidding, DO NOT assume that a bid you see has extended the clock and you could return later to bid on that player. If you are interested in that player, bid on him. It is possible (and it has happened) that the latest bid was illegal (for CAP reasons or too many live bids) and will be rescinded by the Commish. An illegal bid WILL NOT extend the clock. When discovered and declared illegal, the active clock reverts to the last legitimate bid. Bidding might be over.
