Let's remind the new guys, this means little. Just my feeble attempt to size up the teams. Key piece is it means zip. Would love to see your rankings and hear your thoughts 1. A’s- Infield – A+- Schwarber, Rizzo, Donaldson, Kang, Crawford with Seager in the wings Outfield- B- Stanton and a lot of promise. If this is Rusney, Yelich, Bett’s breakout year..EASILY AN A+ SP- A- Best top 10 SP in league with solid additional upside and depth RP- B Needs third closer, plenty active owner Overall- A leagues best team
BIG GAP BETWEEN THE TOP TEAM AND THE REST OF US
2. Indians- Infield-B+ Solid all around, SS just OK Outfield- B- Great depth, lots of injury prone types that can kill a team, boom or bust though SP- C+ – Nice top 6, injury concerns past that- great depth RP- B solid competitive group Overall B- Owner is active and needs only to address issues as they arise
3. Nationals- Infield- C+ Three catchers, SS ?’s, Fielder,Longoria must pickup power and stay healthy Outfield- C+ Upton, Bruce, Gardner solid has some depth SP- B+- Has solid Top 7 and depth RP- B Two closers and two teams worth of holds guys Overall a B- active owner
4. Yankees- Infield-C+ Solid not outstanding at any spot, should look to package 1B, 2B, 3B depth for middle-lower tier SP OF- C+ McCutcheon great, the rest average to below average and have seen their best years or their best years are a ways away (Bell for example) SP- C+ top four rivals anyone’s, needs some depth here but active owner could get to a B+ easily RP-A- Lacks that third closer, but has the top two, should grab holds-strength of team Overall a B-, maybe a year away from the playoffs here or with a move or three right into the top 6
GETS INTERESTING HERE- next few teams going for the final 4 spots
5. White Sox- Infield- B+ Goldschimidt, Healthy Tulo, Wieters are keys Outfield- A Likely leagues best or in the conversation SP- D Liriano the Ace, 2-6 most teams 7+, some young promise but teams biggest hole RP- D- Too many question marks here Overall -Team gets a C+, needs to address SP to repeat, but can win 6 offensive categories weekly
6. Royals- Infield- B - nice solid group, Freeman breakout, rendon and reyes healthy would be great to have here Outfield- C+- Cargo, Joc nice pieces, Calhoun and Ozuna could be as well SP- C, has six starters with some depth. Needs to add some #2-4 starters to improve and maybe an ace, but on the verge here RP- C Has 1-3 closers, health and jobs are ?’s but nice slid group Overall- C+
7. Giants- Infield- A+- SS so so, tops at positions across the rest of the board Outfield- B, Jones is nice leagues average or worse at the other spots SP- D+ Keuchel, Samardzija and then a lot of fillers RP- C- Needs 1-2 closers, solid holds Overall C, active could get to B range
8. Rangers- Infield B- Martin solid/aging, Miggy? Tex healthy?, Odor and Sano slide or improve? SS Questions marks Outfield- C-, Puig, Deshields, Grichuk have upside but not awe inspiring, Buxton talented but unproven SP- C- Deep but needs youth to step up quite a bit. Strasburg, Cueto must be healthy lots of what if’s after Strasburg RP- B, 3 -4 closers or 1. Jansen entrenched but others have question marks but should start with jobs. Overall C, active owner could get to B+
9. Mets- Infield- B+ Nice group added EE, Beltre lots of potential here Outfield- B- Conforto, Eaton Soler, with Gattis, Rasmus and Grandy as utility options could end year with A- SP-D, Cole, Martinez are nice, sanchez can be. Yu, Wheeler are keys here. Could be a B by seasons end RP-D- Needs a closer or two, solid hold Overall C, teams much better and no doubt active owner saved this team from likely finish of F
10. Dbacks- Infield- C+ Solid across the board. Healthy David Wright or big years from Belt could help upgrade Outfield- B+, Cespedes, Ellsbury, Pence is a nice group with plenty of upside and potential utility bats SP- C+ Six deep, solid top 4. Goes 8-10 deep with potential for more RP- B solid relievers, could use one more closer but nice group Overall C, has done a great job to rebuild, active owner and can make a some moves
Teams are in rebuild mode, with work to do but could make a few moves to grab that sixth spot
11. Rockies- Infield- B+- Even with Rizzo loss nice group overall Outfield- A- Harper, Polanco, Gordon are a nice group with decent depth utility bats behind SP- F- Stroman and not much else, 8+ starters on any other team, has work to do here RP- D-Needs a closer or two, solid holds Overall – C-, needs to strengthen pitching big time, offense can carry but need some help
12. Cardinals- Infield- C – Catchers solid, Abreu nice. Good depth at 2B and SS but a ways away from getting to a B or higher Outfield- B- Cain, Dickerson, Springer should be nice if healthy solid depth and utility types here. SP- C- Needs more depth past Archer, Teheran, Miller, Nelson RP- B- Solid here Overall- C-, active owner needs SP depth and to SS or 3B to take next step
13. Cubs- Infield- D- Needs a 1B bat, healthy Pedroia, Sandoval return, and a SS Outfield- B+ Trout, Pollock nice Inciarte, Martin lead a group for LF and Util at bats SP- C - Zimmerman, Lester, Bumgarner nice top three goes 7 deep needs current depth guys to pitch 150+ or acquire additional arms RP- D- Strong holds guys, needs closers Overall- D+
14. Brewers- Infield – B- Solid all around key is Correa, Machado, Hosmer performance Outfield- D depends on Piscotty, Heyward the rest are fringe starters or prosepcts 2+ years away SP- D-Fernandez, Rodon, Sale, and prospects RP- C Cishek could get this team to a B or B+ need McGee and Perkins to keep roles and holds guys perform Overall- D-
